Whether you a
re putting together your 2010 goals or making an expansive bucket list of life’s wishes, one thing remains the same:
Get what you want by getting rid of the fears that are blocking your way.
That’s easy to say, but, you think,
“How can this year be different? How can I get rid of what’s blocking me? How do I keep what’s holding me back from getting the life I want to lead?”
It’s not as hard as you think. It really isn’t.
But, first answer this question?
How hungry are you?
Second, how many of your 2010 goals were on your 2009 list?
How hungry are you?
Maybe you just haven’t been hungry enough.
If you’re vowing that this year will be different, then make it so. What’s on your list?
- Get a new job?
- Go back to school?
- Learn a new skill?
- Start a business on the side?
- Learn a foreign language?
- Lose weight and get in shape?
What are the things on your list that you really aren’t hungry for, but you add them year after year?
I used to include learn to speak Spanish fluently on my list. It would be in the top 10 every year. While I’ve taken courses and enjoy it, I’ve never put in the time or focus required to make my goal a reality. Why? I’m not hungry enough for it. So, I’ve taken Spanish off my list. It will probably come back one of these years when I want to put in the time to make it happen. But, right now it’s not a viable goal for me.
Get rid of the things on your list that are bogging you down. If you’re not going to complete them, including them on your 2010 goal list will only contribute to a sense of failure.
What’s the scariest worst thing that will happen if you try to achieve your goal?
- You might fail.
- You might succeed.
- You’ll run out of money.
- You’ll make lots of money.
- People will lose respect for you.
- People will look up to you.
For some people the fear of success is just as strong as the fear of failure. What’s your fear?
As long as you’re not hurting yourself or anyone else, your fears are only getting in your way. Your fears are getting between you and the life you want.
Make a list of your fears.
Include every single one. Be honest with yourself.
Being afraid to admit your fears will block you from getting what you want. Your fears are not stupid or crazy or weird. Your fears are just keeping you from getting what you want. Your fears have nothing to do with anyone else. You own them and you alone have the power to get rid of them — if you want.
After making your list of fears, look at it and ask yourself,
“What’s the worst thing that will happen? Will anyone die?” If the answer is “no,” then it’s time to focus on the work and solutions to make your 2010 dreams a reality.
The next step: what are you really hungry for?

When is it fear, and when is it just laziness? How honest do I have to be, here?!
Great post. Thanks for making us confront ourselves.

LOVED this post. “Intermediate level Spanish” has been on my goal list for ….yes, 22 years! I took it off last year with tremendous regret. For now I will try to be satisfied by my ability to order food, shop for shoes, and find restrooms and cabs to hotels and airports.
