The Year My TV Died

Big Crazy Thing I Did To Reach My Goals

One year ago my TV died. And, no it didn’t look like the one in the photo. After it went on the fritz,  I started learning and shopping about TV’s. A lot had changed in the 7 years since I’d bought the one that died. Flat screen, HDTV — it was all a bit overwhelming.

I thought, “what would happen if I didn’t get a TV?” So, I didn’t. I decided to re-evaluate in 6 months. 6 months came along, and I forgot about it. Now it’s a year, and I really don’t much care.

For some people this would mean a drastic and unthinkable change in their life. It was a big change for me — I was a news and cooking show junkie. With cable I could find something that interested me at almost any time of the day or night.

I realized cooking shows and news programs weren’t helping me in reaching my goals. In fact, maybe they were just getting in the way.

Here are the results from my ‘no TV’ experiment:

  1. I never really learned who Jon and Kate are — except they were on the covers of a lot of magazines at the grocery checkout stands.
  2. I read 17 books.
  3. I wrote more articles.
  4. I launched a business!
  5. I gained a vast amount of knowledge about social media.
  6. I created new networks for myself.
  7. I was left out of discussions about American Idol!
  8. I listened to more music.
  9. I spent more time conversing with my husband — always good!

Mostly I found myself with more ways to create good use of the time I might have vegged out in front of the TV.

Elimination of TV cleared one pathway to achieve my goals. It was a big, crazy thing to do. I’m so glad I did it.

What big, crazy thing can you do in your life that will help you get what you want?
