Failure — It’s a Good Thing

by Lisa on February 9, 2010

Sometimes, in order to grow, you fail. It happens to everyone. We all fail at something at some point in our lives.

If you’re in a place you’re not happy about, but you’re afraid to initiate changes to improve your situtation for fear of failure, it’s a terrible place to be.

Failure is a sign you’ve tried something new. You opted for what you thought would be an improvement, and it didn’t work out. So what. My yardstick measurement for what’s acceptable:

Was anyone hurt in the process?

No? Then you pick yourself up, and figure out your next plan. Be strategic about your plans. Change for the sake of change is reckless. Know what you’re going to do. Know the goals you want to achieve. Create a road map to get from here to there.

I’ve always said:

If you’re going to make a mistake, make it count.

That way you can learn from them — and hopefully not repeat them.

Taking a risk — whether it’s starting a new business or creating a new marketing plan to attract clients — is a wonderful place to be.

Failure — it can be a good thing. We learn how far we can stretch ourselves and how resilient we are. Failure is the great leveler because it happens to everyone regardless of economic standing. And, sometimes failure gives us the kick in the pants we need at the right time.

In these times, I’m having to do things I’ve never done before – lots of business development to gain new clients where before I could always count on my favorite clients. I have to stretch outside of my comfort zone and let’s just say I am not a smooth as I should be . . . when selling myself and trying to gain biz. There are a lot of NOs – almost all NOs at this point, but if I steadily do it and am consistent I’m hopeful that it will be incorporated in my daily business and I won’t be in such a state – failure is not an option – if I plug away it’ll improve.
